I'll Have a Side of Coffee with my Blood Pressure

I thought that the hardest part of this plan to retire at 36 was going to be figuring out how to make enough money to quit my job and travel, or paying off the debt or even renting out our house. And that may be. I haven't gotten to any of those points yet.

What I can stay, with absolute certainty, that so far the hardest part of this journey has been giving up the coffee.

Let's be realistic, I'm not giving up coffee.  I love coffee. I am addicted to coffee.

Coffee makes me happy.
Coffee brings me comfort.
I love a good cup of coffee in bed.
I love the feel of a warm cup of coffee in my hand.

I want black coffee.
I want Irish coffee.
I want a mocha.
I want a flat white.

My husband brings me coffee every weekend morning in bed. Our dog knows that when he heads upstairs with the coffee cup, she is going to get to cuddle in bed while I warm my hands and my soul with a good cup of hot coffee.

Guess what the first thing you're supposed to cut out of your diet is when you've been diagnosed with high blood pressure? Coffee. Really it's caffeine, but in my world that means coffee.

Today is the first Saturday in YEARS that I haven't had a cup of coffee. Since my blood pressure diagnosis I have allowed myself one cup a day. That is a massive cut back. Today I had a boost in my Jamba Juice instead. It just isn't the same.

What's crazy to me is how hard it's been. The first day I had a single cup of coffee on my drive into work. When I got there I wanted more coffee, so I went to drink tea. Do you know that tea that tastes good also has caffeine? Yeah, it's true. I ended up with some orange herbal tea and a bad attitude.

I haven't had one caffeine headache. Nor have I felt like I need to drink coffee to wake up. It's all about the comfort of a warm cup. That cup is like armor that I put on every morning to get me through the day and keep people from talking to me until I'm all the way awake.

I know that there is a solution to this dilemma but it's the one that has been weighing on me. Salt I can avoid. Exercise I can do (maybe). But no coffee? Or decaf! I'm not sure how I'm going to solve this one. But I'm sure it's going to be fine.
